FAQs

  • How much should it cost to have a water heater installed?

Installing a water heater costs between $800 and $1,600 or an average of around $1,200 including the unit and labor. Tankless heaters can range from about $1,000 to $3,000 for most models, but they have more expensive installation fees. This will require a plumber with advanced skills to set up the unit correctly.

The two most common distinctions between water heaters are tank and tankless. Below we will list out some pros and cons to each type of unit.

    Tank:

    • More cost-effective
    • Shorter lifespan (6-12 years)
    • Different options for energy source (gas, propane, solar, electric)
    • Can be installed in a couple of hours, decreasing the cost of installation

    Tankless:

    • A more expensive option, prices can be $2,000 to $3,000
    • The lifespan can exceed 20 years
    • Different options for energy source (gas, propane, solar, electric)
    • Installation takes an average of 8-10 hours

  • When to replace a water heater?

There are different factors that you must consider when trying to make the best decision between repairing and replacing your water heater. Some of those questions and considerations include:

    • How old is my water heater?
    • How often have I had to repair the unit?
    • Is my water heating up?
    • Is the unit leaking?

We will continue to discuss this question in more detail and look at what you can look for when determining whether to repair or replace your water heater.

Look for the common issues. You would not want to replace your unit if there is a simple fix such as a faulty thermostat or an aged heating element. Reach out to our team to learn what to look for when making this important decision.

Flush your water heater and remove the sediment that may have collected at the bottom. Water heaters must be flushed at least once a year and if that is neglected, this can cause issues.

If you have continuing issues and expenses related to your heater, it may be time to replace the unit. We would love to speak to you and share the different options and help you to figure out which unit would work the best for your family.

  • How often should you flush your water heater?

We recommend flushing your water heater at least once a year. Depending on how hard your water is, it may be wise to flush the tank 2-3 times a year.

Many people ask why water heaters need to be flushed. The reason is that over time, minerals and calcium build up and settle to the bottom of the tank. The heating element is located at the bottom of the tank and can become defective over time. By flushing the tank you are relieving stress from the heating element.

Another common question regarding flushing water heaters is, do I need to flush my tankless water heater? The short answer is yes. Tankless water heaters do not hold as much water but they do hold some. We recommend you flush your tankless heater once a year just like we recommend for the unit that has a tank.

If you have any other questions, we are standing by to assist you. We love educating our customers and helping them to come to informed decisions the benefit their families.

  • Can I replace my water heater myself?

If you are looking to save a few dollars and install your water heater yourself it is possible assuming that you have some experience and the proper tools. Here we have a step-by-step guide to help you as you undertake this project. If you get stuck along the way or would like our professional opinion, give us a call to help with your project.

    1. Shut off the water and gas or power
    2. Drain the water from the tank
    3. Cut the water lines
    4. Attach the new temperature and pressure valve
    5. Attach pipe assemblies
    6. Solder the water lines
    7. Attach the vent
    8. Attach the gas line. It is wise to consult a professional with this step
    9. Check for any back drafting
    10. Look for bubbles at connections and look for leaks
    11. Light the pilot light
    12. Dispose of a water heater

Some people are able to complete these types of projects on their own but we would love to help consult you if you have any questions. Feel free to reach out to our team at (416) 274-3583.
